By connecting spaces
This is a project made for the homes of the elderly. You see, when elderly people are in nursing homes, family doesn’t visit so often, and they can get lonely. And let’s be honest, it’s not good for anyone to be lonely…
That’s where my project comes in. I had the choice between different themes. I picked the one that said “Connect two different rooms or buildings in a meaningful way”. So I went and gave it a thought.. and quite fast I knew I wanted to make people feel less alone in these difficult times.
A few days after I decided the theme I wanted to work on, my boyfriend came to me with a story. He works with the elderly and the story was about a female co-worker who brought her kid to work. The people in the nursing home loved the kid’s presence. This is when I knew what I was going to do.
I made an interactive visual. You probably think, okay… soo? Well, this circle responds to how close you are to a sensor. It changes colour and indicates when someone is near. In the bigger picture, my concept is to eventually track the movement of children in a playground, translate that to these abstract colourful visuals and project those on a wall in a nursing home- to hopefully make the elderly feel less alone.
